5 Ways to Combat Smelly Sneakers
No one likes smelly sneakers! If you are having problems with your sneakers then it’s time to take a look at possible reasons and what you can do about it.
Several factors like sweating, bacteria and other foot injuries can make your sneakers develop a bad smell over time but we’re about to show you proven ways to get your sneakers smelling fresh and nice again.
Treating Smelly Sneakers
Apply Baking Soda
What does a baking ingredient like baking soda have to do with smelly sneakers? We’re not going to ask you to bake a cake, baking soda is great for removing unwanted odours and is great for all kinds of footwear.
Generously sprinkle baking soda into the smelly sneakers and allow them to sit overnight. When you wake up in the morning you can tip out the baking soda and the smell should be gone.
Wash Your Shoes
It goes without saying that one way to kill bad smells from your sneakers is by washing them thoroughly.
Black tea bags to the rescue
You may be surprised to read this one too, however, Black tea contains a substance called “tannins” which will help kill the bacteria contained in your sneakers.
Here are the steps to take:
- Find a bowl or basin big enough to fit both your sneakers.
- Fill the bowl with boiling water and add a tea bag, let it brew for about 3 minutes then take it out.
- Allow the water cool.
- Place your sneakers in the bowl sneakers for about an hour.
- Remove them from the bowl and place them somewhere to dry completely.
- Once completely dry you should notice they aren’t smelly anymore!
Use Dryer Sheets
Dryer sheets are effective ways to remove offensive smells from your sneakers for that fresh smell you desire. Simply place one in each sneaker and leave overnight to defuse odours and remove them before you wear your sneakers again.
This is a great tip for people who regularly have the problem of smelly sneakers over time. When you first start wearing a new pair of sneakers you can do this from day one to keep your sneakers fresh and prevent odours in the first place.
Moisture is one of the biggest causes of smells in your sneakers whether it comes from your feet in the form of sweat especially when you wear them without socks in the summertime, or from your shoes which didn’t get to dry well.
Salt soaks up moisture which is why it will come in handy to dry off your sneakers and restore the fresh smell. Sprinkle a little salt in your sneaker shoes as an easy shoe deodorizer. Remember to shake it out again before you wear them!
You might have noticed when you’ve bought sneakers in the past or other products that they contain little silica pouches - these do the same job - absorb moisture. If you keep these rather than putting them in the garbage, you can use them in your sneakers regularly.
Drops of Essential Oils
A few drops of essential oil into your sneakers or on a piece of tissue that you stuff into your sneakers will give them a refreshing smell. Consider using tea tree, clove or eucalyptus oil; leave in your sneakers overnight to eliminate the smell. Find a smell that you like because Essential Oils can be quite strong - even some sweet smells like Rose or Lavender can cover up smelly sneakers.
How to Prevent Smelly Sneakers
Of course, the ideal way to stop sneakers smelling is to prevent it in the first place! Here are a few ways to avoid smelly sneakers and to keep them fresh after you’ve followed the tips above.
Keep your feet clean
Bacteria on unclean feet spread quickly and could easily contaminate your footwear. Make sure you wash your feet regularly and thoroughly with soap and water – focus on the areas in-between your toes. Always make sure your feet are completely dry before putting your socks and shoes on.
Let your shoes rest
If you are prone to smelly feet no matter what you try, then this could be a good tip for you to try. You might have to add to your sneaker collection! Try not to wear the same shoes for two days in a row. By rotating your sneakers so you’re only wearing them a day or two at a time you can give them a chance to freshen up. It also means your sneakers will last longer and you’ll notice an increase in smells more easily.
Socks are great for many things, keeping our feet warm, adding a protective layer, keeping our feet dry when they are in shoes or sneakers all day. Having a pair of socks that are comfortable and fit well means you can keep your feet warm and dry and protect your sneakers from bad smells.
Be sure to change them every day or after the gym and any time they get wet to keep your feet and sneakers smelly fresh.
No one likes to admit they have smelly feet but it’s even worse when someone else notices. Or if you’re politely asked to leave your shoes outside!
